Welcome to the wonderful world of the Savage, I know your going to have fun. I have the 2001 savage and yes there will be a distinct (crrclunk as you put it) when you go into 1st gear.
Occasionally I too get a very small brake squeak at times, nothing to worry about. As you roll up the miles on the bike, take a look now and then at the front pad thickness and at the rear brake indicator to see how much pad you have left.
If you and/or your husband is somewhat mechanically inclined you can do the routine maintenance yourself. Buy yourself the Clymer repair manual, it will guide you through things. From the previous responses on this forum concerning the 1st service, there are dealers that will rip you off, and dealers that will do what their suppose to do. For instance, if you drive your bike to the dealer for the 1st service and they tell you to pick up your bike a couple hours later I would be suspisous since the engine has to cool down to adjust the valves. Personally I would consider learning to do it myself. All screws and bolts should be checked for proper torque. I hope the previous owner gave you the little owners manual with the bike, it tells you the items to check and perform routine maintence on. As to the Tach, look down the forum, there are several discussions on this subject. Bottom line, there is no tach made specifically for the Savage but there's a couple out there that will work. Enjoy yourself!!!
